Climate Change Policies

Climate change emerged as a political issue in the 1970s, where formal efforts were taken to ensure environmental crises were addressed on a global scale.

The first World Climate Conference in 1979 framed climate change as a global issue and raised concerns that human activities might lead to serious warming of the lower atmosphere. Since then international policy on climate change has focused on cooperation and the establishment of international agreements to address global warming.

Ireland’s Climate Action Plan to Tackle Climate Breakdown outlines the national objective to make Ireland a low carbon, climate resilient and environmentally sustainable society and economy by 2050. This will be achieved through a series of mitigation plans and adaptation frameworks that will be updated on a continual basis and be informed by the latest analysis, performance and any new or corrective actions.
