Dunes act as natural defences against storms, flooding, and erosion, while also supporting rich biodiverse ecosystems. Increases in storm frequency and intensity, together with increased recreational use and tourism creates pressures that can damage these systems and erode our natural protection against the impacts of climate change. #ProtectOurDunes encourages everyone to play a role in safeguarding these vital habitats.

The Climate Action Regional Office are launching our annual Protect Our Dunes Campaign for 2026. This campaign seeks to inspire visitors and locals across all coastal counties in Ireland to protect our beautiful and dynamic dunes systems, the wildlife that they support, and the vital role that they play in protecting our coastal communities.

We would like to invite everyone to participate in this year’s campaign. With your help, we can raise awareness about the importance and fragility of our coastal sand dunes, by sharing the Protect Our Dunes campaign through your Communications Team, or on social channels.

The aim of this year’s campaign is to raise awareness of the biodiversity that our dunes support, and the unintentional negative impacts that people can have on our sand dunes through outdoor recreation, building, and access pathways to our beaches.

You can find a diverse range of pre-prepared social media assets for easy sharing at the following link: Resources Hub – Beaches & Dunes.

Resources are available in both English and as Gaeilge.
