The Leaving Certificate is introducing a new subject- Climate Action and Sustainable Development.
This has come alongside several changes to the senior cycle structure as Minister for Education Norma Foley aims to “empower students to meet the challenges of the 21st century” and “embed wellbeing and reduce student stress levels”.
Following an advisory report from the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA), it was recommended that the senior cycle “helps our young people as they enter an adulthood where global challenges such as sustainability and climate change; technological developments; social and economic trends; and public health concerns can have very local and personal impacts. Such challenges require cross-generational problem-solving, collective ingenuity and motivation if they are to be meaningfully and effectively addressed”.
The new dedicated subject will begin rolling out in pilot schools in September 2024 for fifth year students.
