Línte na Farraige launch Martello Tower, Blackrock, Co. Dublin Installation

Date: 21 Feb 2023

This is the third and final installation in the project with the first installation at the Spanish Arch in Galway on September 29th and the second installation at Wexford Harbour on October 28th 2022.

Línte na Farraige is a series of LED light installations by Finnish artists Timo Aho and Pekka Niittyvirta. The installations show the risks of rising seas and storm surges across Irish coastal sites. It is a collaborative project including scientists from Trinity College Dublin, Maynooth University, the Climate Action Regional Offices, local authorities and Irish creators, Algorithm and Native Events.

The horizontal line of light represent future sea level rise based on predictions from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report AR6 & historic storm surge data. The installations demonstrate that the future is in our hands as the rate of sea level rise depends on our greenhouse gas emission trajectory. By adapting together, we can protect our coastlines and help “lower the line”.

The installations are being powered by photovoltaic (PV) panels located adjacent to the tower.
