Kildare use of Bio-CNG in decarbonising their fleet

Case Study:

Kildare use of Bio-CNG in decarbonising their fleet

Local Authorities represent the largest fleet operators of vehicles in the state.  Work is ongoing to decarbonise the vehicles used to serve our communities.  While there are many options out there to electrify small vehicles like cars and vans, Heavy Goods Vehicles are a challenge, with no feasible options to electrify at present.  Many local authorities have replaced Diesel fuel with renewable Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), which is an effective alternative.  This video outlines the innovative steps taken by Kildare County Council, Gas Networks Ireland and other partners to trial the use of Bio-Compressed Natural Gas (Bio-CNG) instead of diesel in Heavy Goods Vehicles.

Kildare County Council now send their grass cuttings from parks and sports grounds they operate to Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facilities that convert the waste to biomethane gas that is then injected into the gas network, as Bio-CNG.  Vehicles can now top up on CNG sourced direct from the gas network meaning that the vehicle in this video runs on Bio-CNG generated from waste the council recycles; a great example of the low carbon circular economy we need to achieve to reach NetZero.
