Local Authority Climate Action Training

The Local Authority Climate Action Training Programme has been developed under six unique pillars that serve to underpin the commitments set out in Action 150 of the Climate Action Plan 2019 to strengthen and empower Local Authority climate action leadership and build capacity within the sector to further reinforce the delivery of effective climate action.

Building climate action capacity in the local authorities is acknowledged as being essential to support the leadership role in the fight against climate change and in building resilience to its negative effects. It is centred around equipping all local authority staff and elected members with the right resources to improve understanding, knowledge base and skills to enhance performance and increase capacity to drive effective and positive climate action in the work that they do. Building capacity therefore is an investment in the effectiveness and the future sustainability of local authorities on climate action.

The suite of training pillars identified in the short term under the Local Authority Climate Action Training Programme stems from an immediate requirement to develop climate action capacity to deliver on the actions of the adaptation strategies/action plans and to begin to advance positive influence across all functions and activities performed by local authorities.

Training Partners & Contributors

The development of the training programme is a culmination of efforts from a range of contributors, managed by the CAROs and supported by the Department of Communitications, Climate Action & Environment.

Acknowledgement

The Local Authority Climate Action Training Programme has been developed for implementation in response to Action 150 of the Climate Action Plan which seeks to develop and build “Local Authority climate action leadership and capacities”.

Training Programmes

The coordination, development and procurement of training courses under the Local Authority Climate Action Training Programme is being undertaken in conjunction with the LASNTG (Local Authority Services National Training Group). Training courses will be delivered through the existing Regional Training Centre network which supports the training needs of the Local Authority sector.

Training to harness the leadership role of local authority elected members and senior staff in driving effective climate action

Raising Awareness

Training (online) to raise awareness of the role of local authorities in leading on climate action at local and community levels

Building Capacity

Training (online) to raise awareness of the role of local authorities in leading on climate action at local and community levels

Empowering Change

Training to empower local authority staff to promote behavioural change and encourage positive climate action across local communities

Delivering Action

Training to mobilise local authority staff to implement practical outdoor climate action measures

Actioning Policy

Training specifically targeted to translate climate policy and embed climate action into particular local authority functions
